 WHY THE TOOLS ARE IMPORTANT!
Be ready for success!
The fabric and notions listed in our patterns are specific for a reason. They work. These are the tools I use every day in my work and will help you be successful. Our non-traditional methods do not require many tools, but having the right tools will make all the difference in the world for your stitching pleasure and success. I would hate for you to be frustrated and discouraged because of the wrong tools. Please be sure to order everything you need from the website or your local shop, so you are properly prepared. Also, please check out our informative Technique Tutorials and Blogs. I want you to have the best possible experience with our patterns and methods.

Batiks or top-quality hand-dyes are the requested fabric for our projects, particularly for hand work. The reason is they have a high thread count (220). The high thread count produces a tight weave which will give you a nice “hole” when you baste with the No. 7 Sharps needle and 28 wt. basting thread (see below) and minimizes the fraying as you cut and hand stitch. Occasionally I’ve run into a “hard” batik, but not too often. Batiks and hand-dyes are also beautifully colored fabrics, rich in color and design, generally irrelevant which is the right side. I recommend pre-washing fabric before beginning your project. The experienced stitcher may choose silks and other beautiful, challenging fabrics to create with.

For Machine Work
All items are available in the Notions section of our shop at www.eobquiltdesign.com
- Flexi-Fuse: This is a double-sided, paper-backed iron-on fusible that is lightweight yet adheres well. When your piece is done and washed, your quilt piece is supple. Flexi-Fuse comes 21” wide in 3 lengths: 1 yd x 21”, 2 yds x 21” or 3 yds x 21”.
- Terial Magic: a spray-on stabilizer defined as “Best Press on steroids”, and just about the only stabilizer I use. We use it to stabilize fused fabric pieces before stitching machine reverse applique. Spray it on, let dry 15-20 min. and iron dry the rest of the way. Depending on how much you use it stiffens your fabric like paper, so it won’t pucker into your satin stitch. Also great for machine embroidery, applique or if you need to stabilize bias cut quilt pieces. When you are done it just washes out. Can also be used with 3-D art pieces.
- Kai 4” bent-handled sharp-tipped scissors: I use these scissors to cut out all my fused reverse applique pieces. The tips are so sharp I can poke right on the edge of the design, and their small size gives me great maneuverability and precision. The bent-handled shape keeps the blade and fabric flat on the table and my cutting hand off the piece as it cuts. These scissors open and close easily, cutting down on hand/ wrist fatigue, and the vanadium steel holds its edge. These are my go-to scissors, using them to un-sew seams and satin stitches.
- Machine Accessory Kit: A convenient start-up kit for machine reverse applique that includes: 1 – 21” x 1 yard piece of FlexiFuse; 1 – 16 oz. Terial Magic; Kai 4” bent-handled, sharp-tipped scissors for machine work. (Cost = $43.00)

Other helpful products: All items are available in the Notions section of our shop at www.eobquiltdesign.com
-Pin Pals: I use my Pin Pal to hold my Kai scissors. The Pin Pal stays in place by 2 magnets-one in front and one in the back. Of course, you can also use it to keep your pins handy.
- Needle Cases: Store your hand sewing needles in style with these beautiful wood-turned needle cases. We carry an assortment of colors, so you can separate your needles and buy a case for each style you use.
- No. 9 and No. 10 Hand Quilting Needles (10 needles): Our No. 9 and No. 10 Hand quilting/ Between needles are John James needles are what we use for hand quilting. They are Gold N’ Glide, which means they will glide smoothly through your quilt sandwich. All John James needles are honed well so there are no burrs.
- Perfect Piecing Foundation Sheets: These are fabulous for paper-piecing as they are like lightweight interfacing. You can run them through a printer to print your foundation patterns on them. You can easily see through them for positioning your pieces, and when finished, you can leave the Perfect Piecing Foundation Sheet in your block for added stability.
-Stabilizer for Silk & T-shirts: A lightweight, iron-on interfacing/ stabilizer by Rowley. It feels like a piece of lingerie with glue on one side for fusing onto silk or T-shirts. It tames the fraying of silk fabric yet keeps the suppleness of silk. With T-shirts it manages the curling of woven knits, gives it body yet keeps them soft and supple, too.
- Roxanne’s basting glue: A must have product for holding the sashing strips in place when doing our quilt-as-you-go class. Also helpful for a fast method of doing bindings…temporarily glue first and then machine sew close to the seam. Heat sets it, and then it washes out. Choose 1 oz or 2 oz bottles.
- Quilt-As-You-Go Handbook: Explains the steps of Pauline Rogers’ Quilt-As-You-Go method with all her experiential tips. She gives ideas for quilting and goes beyond the basics of quilting as you go, covering other uses for the sashers for making sashing, spacers, bias, trim and bindings. Handbook includes pages for making your own personal notes.
- Sasher Collection – ultimate, large, medium, small, and x-small: Make an assortment of sizes of sashings from 1/8” – 4” quickly for use in our Quilt-as-You-Go classes without burning your fingers. Ultimate set has 12 different sasher sizes, Large set has 10 different sasher sizes, Medium set has 4 different sizes, the small one is a 1” sasher, and the x-small is a ½” sasher. Can also be used for making bias, bindings, and trims.

Instructor: Margaret Brewster Willingham
Instructor Bio: Margaret Brewster Willingham, the creative mind at work behind Eye of the Beholder Quilt Designs, is an international teacher and lecturer, pattern designer and author. Margaret’s quilts are influenced by the dynamic elements of movement, color and design she used for over 40 years as a choreographer of dance as she composes unique quilts full of beauty, elegance, and inspirational color. For Margaret, quilting is a journey of excellence and a creative act of hope. Her award-winning quilts and her teaching style invite you into that journey. Her greatest joy is in passing on skills and growing confidence in quilters new and old, inspiring us each to listen to our own creative voice and to have the confidence to try something new. She is most well-known for the innovative (and foolproof!) methods she’s devised for reverse applique – ‘Trace, Baste, Snip and Stitch’, which takes the mystery (and hardship) out of reverse applique. Many of her designs can be completed by either hand or machine, for those times when you just must have it finished quickly! In addition, she designs patterns for commercial and Indie fabric companies, including Island Batik, Banyan Batiks and Batik Textiles, and co-authored her first book in 2018: Christmas RAPPing, Christmas Quilts featuring Reverse Appliqué & Paper-Piecing (with Nan Baker). She teaches regularly at specialist applique retreats and at festivals, including Academy of Applique, Applique Away on Galveston Bay, Houston International Quilt Festival, Houston Virtual Quilt Festival, QuiltFest, Road to Ca, Vermont Quilt Festival, AQS Lancaster and Paducah, both inperson and virtually. In 2023 she appeared on The Quilt Show (#3309 on Oct. 22) and taught at AQS Paducah, and KCRQF. In 2024 she taught at the John C. Campbell Folk School, NC, and returned to teach at AQS Paducah and Houston International Quilt Festival, was the featured teacher at Quilting on the Green, WY, as well as quilt guilds throughout the country. In 2025 she will teach at AQS Lancaster and be published in Love of Quilting again. In January 2026 she will teach on AQS Quilt Cruise Hawaii. If you or your local guild/shop are interested in booking her for workshops or lectures, please contact her via her website. www.eobquiltdesign.com
