Wild Oats
Sewing Company
Having parents involved in fashion design, Deborah was surrounded by textiles from a very young age. As a teen, she rummaged through flea markets and thrift stores looking for vintage textiles and lace, not realizing her passion for textiles would evolve into a life-long career, starting with a degree in textile design from the Ontario College of Art and Design. For more than two decades Deborah worked as VP of Design for an international company designing fabric, bedding, wallcovering and area rugs. She has developed collections for celebrities including Martha Stewart and Jaclyn Smith and has been a member and chair holder of Color Marketing Group for many years.
Looking for a new challenge, Deborah welcomed the opportunity to join Northcott as Design Director.
"In addition to creating my own collections under the Northcott brand, the privilege of collaborating with and supporting designers from various disciplines continues to be an exciting journey".
Melanie Samra
Melanie Samra was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. It was there, an artist was born. Her love for color and design was evident early on. At the tender age of four, she created her very first masterpiece. With a box of Crayola’s and a half an hour before bedtime, she was able to transform her entire white bedroom into something resembling that of a Jackson Pollock. Needless to say, she learnt, not all that is white, is a blank canvas.
She later redirected her creativity, and graduated with a Fine Arts Degree from Dawson College. After graduation, she moved to Toronto, Ontario where she enrolled and graduated from OCADU.(Ontario College of Art and Design University). Upon graduation, Melanie found work as a freelance illustrator. One of her commissions was to illustrate the cover of a Wallpaper Book. This led her to a full time position as a designer with the company, Sunworthy Wallcoverings. Having never heard the words: repeat, half drop or tracking, she was in for quite the education. It was there she discovered her passion for surface print and textile design. A quick study, within five years Melanie was promoted to a Design Director. After seven years with the company, Melanie decided to open her own studio, Samra Design Studio Inc. Melanie has been designing wallpaper and fabric ever since, and is still enjoying every minute.
Funny thing.....after all these years, her bedroom is currently all white.
